Christian leaders have been sounding the alarm against the practice of yoga since the late 1800's. Concerns about the practice point to yoga being developed as a philosophical and spiritual practice within a pagan religion. And like most religions, the body postures in yoga have particular meaning. "The way the diabolic works, it's a two way street. The bodily postures, you can't separate certain things from the innate spiritual meaning behind it." The Christian religion, too has meaning for specific postures. St. Benedict identified several prayer postures. Both religions have postures that communicate the relationship between the person and the deity.
What is the modern American woman to make of such warnings, now that yoga has lodged itself into the fabric of American culture? Most Catholic women practicing yoga today would likely retort, "I do yoga for exercise. It means nothing spiritual to me!" Ah, but do we no longer believe in the mystical? Apparently not. As the 100th anniversary of the Fatima Apparitions fades in our rearview mirror, the world at large does not acknowledge the hundreds, if not thousands, of Marian Apparitions that have been reported around the globe for the past century. The idea of spiritual warfare, a cosmic battle between good and evil for your soul, has been diminished to a quaint myth. And so, good Christian women are satisfied to continue their weekly spiritual ritual without giving it so much as a google search.
